CEREBRAL PALSY
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is not a single disease but a disorder of posture and movement caused by non-progressive damage to an area of the brain while it is still developing. Although the brain damage doesn't progress, symptoms may appear to do so as the brain matures and problems become more evident.
Cerebral Palsy is classified by the type of movement problem (spastic or athetoid) or the body parts involved (hemiplegia, diplegia and quadraplegia). Spacticity refers to the inability of a muscle to relax, while athetosis refers to an inability to control movement of a muscle. Hemiplegia involves one arm and one leg on the same side of the body, diplegia involves both legs and quaraplegia involves all four limbs as well as the trunk and neck.
