AUTISM and ASPERGER SYNDROME

What is Autism?

Autism is a syndrome, which means that it is a condition defined by the existence of a collection of characteristics.  These can include: difficulty in verbal and/or nonverbal communication, rigidity in thought processes, difficulty with learning abstract concepts, generalizing information and difficulty with reciprocal social interaction. Symptoms may be apparent within first 3 years of the child's life.  Autism is a life-long developmental disability.

When reading information on any condition such as Autism, it seems to paint a very bleak picture, detailing all the problems that can be found in Autism.  As with every child,  Autistic children have their own levels of achievements and difficulties; they are individuals, like every other.

There has been a lot of debate about whether Asperger's Syndrome is the same as Autism, some believe it should have a separate classification of its own.  Although they are similar and within the same spectrum of developmental disorders, it is important for you and your child to get a clear diagnosis, but also to be aware that it can change through life. The severity of  impairments in Autism is often much greater than in Asperger Syndrome.

A child with Asperger Syndrome or Autism is a child, just like the rest.  They have their own personalities, abilities, likes and dislikes.  As with all extra special children, they require that extra support, patience and understanding from everyone around them.
