ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT What is Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)? {mosgoogle}The septum is a wall that separates the heart's left and right sides. Septal defects are sometimes called a "hole" in the heart. A defect between the heart's two upper chambers (the atria) is called an atrial septal defect (ASD). Many people with this defect have few, if any, symptoms. Closing an atrial septal defect in childhood is likely to prevent any serious problems later in life and the long-tern outlook is excellent. The defects can also be repaired in adulthood. Once the atrial septal defect has been repaired, people rarely have any problems and it is unlikely more surgery will be needed. |
