What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn't close completely. The effects of spina bifida are different in every person.

There are three different types of spina bifida:

Meningocele is where the protective coatings come through the open part of the spine. There is usually no nerve damage, but individuals can suffer minor disabilities.

Occulta also known as hidden spina bifida, there is a small defect or gap in a few of the small bones that make up the spine. Athough there may be no motor or sensory impairments evident at birth, progressive neurological deterioration often become apparent later on in life. This form of spina bifida can be can be very mild.

Myelomeningocele is where the meninges and spinal nerves come through the opening part of the spine. This is the most serious type of spina bifida and can cause more severe disabilities.
