The "Mine Field" that is choosing the RIGHT lightweight wheelchair

Choosing a lightweight wheelchair is a very personal thing. There is no such thing as an average sized person. We are all different, whether in our size, age or disability. It is therefore important to purchase a chair that meets your own very specific requirements .i.e. Bespoke - tailor made for you.

It does not matter how good a wheelchair product is, if it does not fit the individual it will never get rave reviews. Every chair is as individual as the user.

Your new chair should meet the following criteria

  • Fully meet your clinical needs
  • Give you the ultimate in postural positioning and pressure distribution.
  • Be comfortable
  • Be stable
  • Be functional and practical - in that it suits your lifestyle, daily routine and environment
  • Perform to the highest level

How to make an informed decision when purchasing Always speak to companies with a proven track record. Do your home work - investigate thoroughly not only what your supplier can offer in meeting your clinical needs, but also the quality of after sales service and availability of spare parts. It's always worth checking if the chair of your choice carries any guarantee or warranties, there are manufacturers who give life-time guarantees on their chairs.

Take your time, its far better to take several months in deciding what chair will suit your specific requirements rather than making a snap decision, remember that you will be seated in the chair of YOUR choice for some considerable time.

Always endeavour to have a home trial for a period of time preferably one week or more so that you can fully evaluate the chairs suitability.  I hear so many horror stories about individuals sitting in a chair for twenty minutes and then deciding to buy because they like the colour of the demonstration chair! Not a good idea!

If possible it is always advisable to visit chair manufactures factories and showrooms as you will be able to see all models of chairs together with all available options. To re-iterate - make sure that you are able to obtain the ultimate postural positioning from the demonstration chair, this MUST be your primary aim. Reputable companies will make this their priority; beware of those who do nothing but talk about extra cost options and fancy paint work.

Seek professional advice from therapists at your local wheelchair services. Your local wheelchair service will also be able to inform you about the Independent Option on the voucher scheme. This scheme part funds private purchases of wheelchairs by the end user.  All wheelchair users are eligible - you are not means tested.

Remember less is more, extra items should only be added when necessary.  Ergonomically designed chairs will naturally be better than those that are not.
