Cerebral Palsy Register for Scotland

The Cerebral Palsy Register for Scotland (CPRS) is a research register, set up, and run by a team of researchers from Napier University and the NHS in Scotland. The aims of the register are to further investigate and understand cerebral palsy (CP).

The CPRS registers children with all types of CP at all levels of severity, born after the 1st of January 1990. A previous register in Scotland recorded information on children born prior to this date. The CPRS is completely voluntary, and children can only be registered with written parental/carer consent. In order to register parents/carers must complete a consent form and a short additional information sheet. In accordance to the ethical approval that the CPRS has we must inform your child’s GP that they have joined the register. However all information you provide us with will remain confidential and will not be passed onto anybody outside of the CPRS team.

Like many of the CP registers across the UK (Belfast, Liverpool, Newcastle, Oxford) the CPRS collects information (with parental/carer consent) from the child’s paediatrician with regards to diagnosis, level of severity, and services offered. Also, we also believe that it is important to collect the valuable information from the child’s parents or carers, and so we them ask to complete a questionnaire about their daily life with their child. Again this is completely voluntary, and children can remain on the register regardless of whether their parents/cares completes this questionnaire.

Although many of the benefits of the CPRS are long term, that is we will hopefully understand more about CP but this may take some time, we will be keeping all families registered with us up to date with all our work and findings. We have a website for families to visit, and we will also send all families a newsletter twice a year with all our news.

If you would like to find out more about the register, or have any questions, please visit the website at www.napier.ac.uk/cprs, or contact us at CPRS, Merchiston Campus, Napier University, Edinburgh, EH10 5DT. 0131 455 2454,  .
